Padma Shri Birubala Rabha
পদ্মশ্ৰী বীৰুবালা ৰাভা (১৯৫৪ – ২০২৪)
A fearless grassroots warrior who confronted superstition, saved hundreds of innocent lives from witch-hunting violence, and spearheaded historic legal protection for vulnerable women across Assam.

A Courageous Stand Against Violent Superstition
In rural Assam, whenever misfortune, disease, or crop failure struck a village, traditional quacks and vested interests frequently blamed vulnerable widowed, destitute, or elderly tribal women, branding them as *Daini* (witches) to usurp their land and subject them to horrific lynching.
Birubala Rabha’s crusade began from a deeply personal turning point in 1985, when her son fell mentally ill and a local quack declared he would die in three days. By securing medical care and saving his life, she realized the deadly nature of these superstitious fabrications and vowed to rescue others.

Direct Life-Saving Rescues
Over 50+ Direct Mob Interventions
Birubala personally walked into hostile village assemblies to rescue women condemned to lynching. She gave them shelter in her own home, provided medical care, and re-integrated ostracized families back into society.
Historic Legislative Reform

Milestones of the Crusade
Key phases in the lifelong journey of Padma Shri Birubala Rabha.
Birth in Thakurvila
Born in Thakurvila village near Dudhnoi in the Goalpara district of Assam into a humble Rabha farming family. Faced early poverty and lost her father at an early age, receiving only elementary school education before marriage.
The Turning Point (The Catalyst)
Her eldest son fell severely ill with typhoid and mental distress. A local quack (Ojha/Bej) falsely diagnosed him as possessed and predicted he would die within three days. Birubala refused to abandon him and secured medical treatment, watching him make a full recovery. This shattered her belief in quackery and ignited her lifelong crusade against blind superstition.
Thakurvila Mahila Samity & First Rescues
Formed the Thakurvila Mahila Samity with village women to combat domestic violence and social evils. Began fearlessly intervening in kangaroo courts where innocent elderly or widowed women were branded as 'Daini' (witches), standing between furious mobs and targeted victims.
Founding of 'Mission Birubala'
Formally launched 'Mission Birubala' uniting social activists, progressive lawyers, doctors, and survivors. Traveled across the remotest corners of Assam, Meghalaya, and Bengal to rescue victims, provide legal defense, shelter, and conduct mass rationalist awareness campaigns.
The Assam Witch Hunting Act 2015
Her decade-long advocacy culminated in the Assam Legislative Assembly passing the historic Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act, 2015—making witch-branding cognizable, non-bailable, and carrying sentences up to life imprisonment.
