Sukracharya Rabha
শুক্ৰাচাৰ্য ৰাভা (১৯৭৭ – ২০১৮)
A pioneering theatrical visionary who founded Badungduppa Kalakendra, revolutionized contemporary Indian performance art, and pioneered the eco-theatre movement 'Under the Sal Tree'.

Under the Sal Tree Movement
Sukracharya Rabha believed that theatre must strip away artificiality to touch the soul of the audience. In 2008, he established 'Under the Sal Tree'—a global eco-theatre festival staged entirely inside a natural forest canopy without microphones, artificial lighting, or stage boundaries.
His theatrical collective, Badungduppa Kalakendra, trained rural youths to convert traditional Rabha music, oral epics, and ancestral rituals into physical performances, showcasing their living heritage to global audiences.
Pillars of Environmental Theatre
The ecological tenets that define Badungduppa's nature-bound performances.
Zero Artificial Light
Performances are staged strictly during daytime hours under the canopy of sal trees. The dynamic interplay of filtered afternoon sunlight, tree shadows, and natural twilight serves as the sole visual lighting design.
Pure Acoustic Resonance
Microphones and loudspeakers are strictly banned. Performers train their vocal projection, breathing, and body resonance to harmonize with the whisper of sal leaves and birdsong.
The Living Forest as Stage
Actors move among living trees, mossy earth, and bamboo seating. The forest is not a passive decorative backdrop, but an active, breathing protagonist.
Chronological Path
Major milestones in the life and artistic direction of Sukracharya Rabha.
Birth in Rampur
Born in the sal-forested hamlet of Rampur near Agia in Goalpara district, Assam. Immersed from early childhood in traditional folk percussion (Kham, Badungduppa) and village storytelling.
Founding of Badungduppa Kalakendra
Established the Badungduppa Kalakendra theatre commune in Rampur village with local rural youth, seeking to forge a radical new contemporary theatrical vocabulary rooted entirely in Rabha cultural ethos.
Inception of 'Under the Sal Tree'
Curated the inaugural 'Under the Sal Tree' international theatre festival inside Rampur's dense sal grove. Conceived as a zero-carbon, plastic-free festival operating with zero artificial microphones, no electric spotlights, and bamboo amphitheaters.
Sangeet Natak Akademi Yuva Puraskar
Conferred the prestigious Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for Direction by the National Sangeet Natak Akademi, acknowledging his pioneering role in Indian contemporary theatre.
Global Renown & International Ensembles
Badungduppa hosted theatrical troupes from across India, Poland, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Brazil, and the USA, becoming a global pilgrimage site for environmental performance art.
Untimely Departure & Living Legacy
Passed away tragically from a sudden cardiac arrest on June 8, 2018, at the young age of 41. His legacy continues to thrive through Badungduppa Kalakendra and annual editions of 'Under the Sal Tree'.
